The Travel Rule is the FATF requirement that VASPs and financial institutions obtain, hold and transmit originator and beneficiary information with payments or value transfers, including virtual assets; it applies FATF Recommendation 16 on payment transparency to virtual assets. The EU applies it through Regulation (EU) 2023/1113: the originator's crypto-asset service provider must ensure transfers carry the originator's and beneficiary's names and distributed ledger addresses. In FATF's 2026 survey, 83% of respondents had passed Travel Rule legislation.
